Finding Freedom from Alcohol Abuse

Freedom from alcohol abuse

Finding freedom from alcohol abuse is one of the most common problems in just about every culture and generation.

That’s probably because the use of alcohol is not considered to be dangerous to most societies.

Don’t get me wrong though… when I talk about alcohol not being considered dangerous…

I mean I’m aware that driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is dangerous in any society.

And also most all societies have a certain age that we have to be before we can purchase or consume it. (alcohol).

What I am talking about here is that in most societies and cultures alcohol is not deemed an illegal substance such as marijuana and opioids are.

Therefore once we reach a certain age the only limit to what we can consume or purchase depends on how much money we have to buy it.

In this piece, I want to discuss four (4) points concerning the use of alcohol that I am very familiar with and they are…

1. Deception of Alcohol Use
2. Dangers of Alcohol Abuse
3. The Destruction of Alcohol Abuse
4. Deliverance from Alcohol Abuse.

The Deception of Alcohol Abuse

Here is a verse of scripture that jumped off the page as I was studying in the word of God one morning.

It reads like this…

“Wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Okay, my friend, you might be saying to yourself that “I don’t drink wine or hard liquor… So, this doesn’t apply to me.”

Well, before this verse jumped out at me…I too used that as a scapegoat so to speak concerning my alcohol use and abuse of the substance.

When someone would ask me if I drank? I would always say yes… But I don’t normally drink wine or hard liquor.

But you see this was my reasoning within, which gave me that right to drink as much beer as I wanted to drink.

That was my deception, my friend.

The Bible tells us to not be deceived because whatever a man, woman, boy or girl sow, that shall we also reap.

So, what that means for me is that no matter what type of alcohol I use… it is not good for me nor for my relationship with the Lord and others as well.

For many years I deceived myself or attempted to convince myself that drinking beer was alright for me.

This is what I have discovered as I have matured in my relationship with the Lord.

Everything is not for everybody… What I mean by that is that what God will allow others to do is not always right for me.

This principle applies to every child of God.

With that said, let me talk to you about…

The Dangers of Alcohol Consumption

Have you ever heard of MoonShine?

Well, if you have… you already know that moonshine can be some of the strongest of alcohols that can be dranked.

Sometimes moonshine can be 100 proof or even higher.

When I was a teenager I and some friends of mine got acquainted with what’s known as Golden Grain.

Golden Grain was about as close as you can get to legalized Moonshine… At least in those days, it was.

Now we have TV shows glamourizing the making of moonshine by folks hiding their liquor stills in the woods somewhere.

So much for that though… and I say all of that to say this…

My mom and dad used to tell us stories of how people lost their lives from drinking bad moonshine.

They said that the bad moonshine was full of lead that was deposited into the moonshine by using the wrong utensils while distilling the product.

So what does this have to do with the dangers of alcohol in today’s culture?

Well, my friend, I’m so glad that you asked.

Because it may be that you won’t get lead poisoning from bad moonshine but you still can die from alcohol poisoning if you drink too much.

There are unreported deaths every year that happens on college campuses throughout the country due to alcohol poisoning.

But wait that’s not all I have to say about the dangers of drinking alcoholic beverages.

Let’s See if You Can Relate To This…

First I need to show what the word of God says…

During my deliverance, God showed me a picture of myself through these verses of the scriptures.

“Who has woe? Who has grief? Who has contention? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has bloodshot eyes?

30  Those who linger over their wine, who consume mixed drinks.

31  Don’t stare into red wine, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.

32  Eventually, it will bite like a snake and sting like a serpent.

33  Your eyes will see strange things, and with slurred words, you’ll speak what you really believe.

34  You will be like someone who lies down in the sea or like someone who sleeps on top of a mast.

35  “They struck me,” you will say, “but I never felt it. They beat me, but I never knew it When will I wake up? I want another drink.” Proverbs 23: 29-35

That kinda sums it up for the dangers and also the deception of alcohol abuse… Don’t you think?

Listen, if that type of behavior continues in any life, man or woman it only leads to this…

The Destruction of Alcohol Use

Let me be perfectly clear on this one my dear friend.

As far as I can remember back every time that I got in trouble the cause of it was due to excessive drinking.

Let me a bit more transparent here though, because maybe my transparency can help you to see yourself in a different light as well.

So, as I said alcohol caused me more problems than a little…

Let’s see… Where should I start telling you about the troubles it caused?

Well, first it causes me to make bad decisions in my first marriage…

Drinking caused me to make a choice to go outside of the vows of my marriage and have sex with another woman.

Drinking caused me to lose my driving privilege for many years by being charged with DUI.

Not only once but 3 times. And it’s only by the grace of God that only 2 of them stuck.

You can read about the outcome of the third, in my brief testimony. “My Road To Damascus Experience.”

More Destruction Coming Soon…

PLEASE don’t misunderstand me and please don’t think that because I’m sharing this with you — that I think light of it. Because I really don’t.

I’ve made some pretty bad choices behind the alcohol abuse in my lifetime. Some of which I believe that I am stiil living out the consequences.

Here’s one of them…

Alcohol consumption caused me to lose one of the best jobs that I ever landed in my adult life. It was a job in the freight industry.

I won’t name the company, but they were and are still very noticeable in the industry. That’s all I have to say about that.

But losing that job was so to speak the straw that broke the camel’s back in my second marriage.

I have to give it to my ex-wives… they were and are some pretty amazing women… They really tried their best to hang in there with me.

I knew deep down that drinking was the cause of just about everything bad thing happening in my life. But I kept on drinking anyway.

As I said before, I would try to use the fact that I didn’t drink strong liquor or wine as a scapegoat for drinking more beer. Sometimes 18- 24 beers within a single day.

That’s just too much for 3 people…

Now you can read a little bit more about the destruction that alcoholism caused me in my brief testimony here.

But for now, I really want to share with you…

My Personal Deliverance from Alcohol Abuse

Maybe you see yourself in those verses of the scripture in Proverbs 23:29-35.

I could see myself in several of those situations.

But GOD…

Yes, my friend, but GOD stepped in and out of his great loved wherewith he has loved me since before the foundation of the world.

God delivered me…. and listen if you or someone that you know is ruining their life because of alcohol abuse. I’m here to tell you there is HOPE!

Jesus is stronger than any problem or any addictive behavior that’s known to mankind.

He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and every knee must bow to his authority.

When finding freedom from alcohol… Alcoholism must bow. Every name in heaven and in the earth must bow and surrender to the name and authority of Jesus Christ.

Maybe You Need A Picture…

God has some amazing ways that he can deliver…ways that you and I can’t even imagine.

As a matter of fact 1 Corinthians 2:9 backs up this claim…

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”

So, picture this…

The next time you decide to take a drink and you know you shouldn’t… Picture God (Jesus) standing in front of you, and as you’re having that drink, imagine yourself pouring it over his head.

That’s pretty sobering huh?

Well, it is and was for me… Because that’s the vision or picture that he gave to me for my personal deliverance.

Oh, by the way… He also gave me a similar picture to help me stop smoking cigarettes as well.

That’s why I say, maybe you need a picture.

Ask him for one. Or maybe you can share mine with me. With Christ, you can be sure of finding freedom from alcohol abuse.

Who the Son makes free, is free indeed.

You can be free…
