I would go out on the limb a and say that just about everyone you and I meet needs to be made free from something. But finding freedom is not easy.
Some of the things that people want freedom from are our freedom from some type of illness, freedom from bad relationships, freedom from drugs and alcohol etc.
You name it somebody is looking for freedom in/and of something.
In this article, I want to touch some areas where I too have been held captive. These are areas that many others are struggling with even today.
But before we get started… Let first say that most of what you will be reading here is not out something that I have heard from someone else.
What I will let you in on is some of my personal experiences… And the truth is as the Bible teaches.
When we finally become free to be the person who God has called us to be, everything changes.
But finding out who that person is — is not necessarily an easy task.
When we become Christians our conversion causes is to began to see life from a different perspective… Why is that you might ask?
Well, it’s because when we are saved the Bible tells us that we are new creations in Christ. It says it like this…
1 Corinthians 5:17 If any man is in Christ he is a new creature, old things have passed away. Behold! All things have become new.
What does that mean for the believer or follower of Christ? I’m glad you asked…
It means that you and I receive a new life, a new nature, a new purpose and more importantly a new identity.
That new identity, however, is only found in Christ and as a matter of fact, the Bible tells us that it is hidden in Christ.
Colossians 3:3 reads this way… For you are dead and your life is hidden in Christ in God.
Discovering your new identity takes time and study. Learning how to walk in the newness of life is not going to happen for you or me overnight.
So be patient…
Knowing your identity in Christ mainly consists of three things.
1. Acceptance: This is knowledge of the love that God has for you and understanding that you are not an enemy of God in Christ.
2. Significance: This is the discovering or the realizing of your worth in the eyes of God. God created us for a purpose.
3. Security: Understanding that once truly saved, you and I are always saved. This is a hard one for many in the Church.

It’s when we discover these things about our identity only then will we be able to find…
When we get saved or receive Christ as our Lord and Saviour we are classified – so to speak – as babes in Christ.
Just as newborn babies in the natural world has to be taught and learn everything that he or she needs to know.
So it is in the spirit… Or as a new creature in Christ.
As a new Christian, you and I are learning a whole new lifestyle. A higher way of living and thinking.
The Bible calls it the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
But this high calling is not like anything that the world system has to offer and if the truth is told… And I will.
The world system and the folks that live in it, and by it, would call the high calling of God foolishness. Yet in reality, it’s through the foolishness of preaching that God has confounded the wisdom of man concerning his salvation and the life in which we should live. 1 Corinthians 1: 18-24
So, the world tells us to build ourselves up. The word of God teaches us to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God and he will lift us up.
The world tells us to save ourselves and the Bible teaches us that if we try to save our lives we will lose our lives.
I have tried to save my life several times to no avail.
Maybe you are still trying to preserve yourself and you’ree finding out that nothing you do is working out.
It could be that just as I had to discover, that freedom from yourself is the key to finding your purpose and fulfillment in this life.
I’m always reminded of what a good friend shared with me.
He told me that if God can get you away from yourself… Then he could do something with me. It’s true because when that happened that’s when I ultimately…
Found Freedom From Alcohol and I found freedom from drugs.
I also was able to admit that I was addicted to porn. And I found freedom from pornography.
So how has my life benefited from this new found freedom?
Well, my friend, I’m really glad you asked. Because you see this newfound freedom has allowed me to concern myself with that which is most important.
Love is the most splendid thing. Learning how to love properly does not come easy for most of us because we don’t have an understanding of what love is.
I personally don’t believe love is discussed enough in the Church or in our everyday lives.
I wonder why that is?
I’ll tell you why that is… It’s because it makes us uncomfortable.
And why does it make us uncomfortable you might ask?
Well, friend, it’s because true love requires something of us and true love is ultimately sacrificing our wants and desires for the best interest of someone else.
That’s hard… But it can be done… And it’s because God doesn’t ask us to do something that he’s not willing and able to help us achieve.
After all didn’t the Lord Jesus tell us John 15:5 that without him we can do nothing?
We think we can though.
You can find out what God told me about learning how to love him and others here.
But for the meantime let me just say that until you and I learn how to do this thing called love, you and I are going never understand the concept of having and knowing
Mankind is inherently selfish. Hard to believe huh?
We come into this world with one goal in us and that’s to get our needs met by someone else.
Now before you start analyzing the statement… I realize that’s a bit extreme. But it’s only to drive the point a little deeper.
I’m not saying that babies shouldn’t be taken care of because they are selfish. No, we should always take care of the babies.
But think about it in this way… How much have you changed since childhood? Do you still find yourself trying to get your needs met by manipulating others?
Listen, my friend, we have all been on one side of manipulating or being manipulated at one time or another.
That’s just a part of life.
As Christians, we are called to a new way of thinking and a new way of life. We are called to serve one another in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
Remember that I said earlier that you and I are called with the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
This means that our lives are to be conformed into the image of Jesus Christ.
So, what does that look like?
Simply put that looks like this… The things that we read about in the scriptures about our Lord are the things that we should imitate.
The Bible says that Jesus went about doing good. That’s where we should be starting.
Our Lord and Savior lived a selfless life throughout his earthly ministry. And that’s what we should be striving for as well.
We learn to serve when we learn to love and we will only learn how to love properly when we die to ourselves.
When this is achieved you and I can start finding our freedom in Christ and begin to live the life that God has called us to live.
