Love…What’s Important About That?

The date that I’m writing this is 1/30/2019. Now you may be asking yourself or saying to yourself what’s important about that?

I’m glad you asked…

It’s important because no matter when you are reading this… what I’m about to share with you is most important.

And it’s the most important thing that you can think of or put into action no matter when, where or how you do it…

So, I guess now you are asking yourself… Well, what is the most important thing that I’m talking about huh?

I’m glad you’re asking that too… So, I will tell you without further ado.

The Most Important Thing

The most important thing that we can do is learn what the most important thing really is…

I know, I know… You are probably thinking to yourself that you read all of the other stuff just to get to this.

But wait… hold on a moment, I promise if you keep reading you will discover something about life and yourself that you may or may not have ever considered.

Doing the important stuff first.

Doing the important stuff first is something that most of us think we have already set in order in our lives.

Here’s one thing that I have learned over the past years and it is that a well-balanced life can only be achieved through the help and guidance of God.

And for the human race, this is something that doesn’t happen overnight.

For the past few weeks prior to writing this article, I have been hearing a lot about what’s most important.

I mean it seems to be coming up everywhere that I turn.

I mentioned earlier that learning what’s most important is the most important thing that we can do. But that’s not all to it though.

You see once you understand that you have to learn what the most important thing is…

Then the thing that you have come to understand is that learning how to Love is the most important thing that we can learn and do in life.

Love Is an Action.

There’s a book that was written a few years back titled The Five Love Languages.

This book was written by Gary Chapman and it was and is a best seller.

I will not go into to much detail about the book but what I will do is share the 5-five languages and their meanings.

So, according to Dr.Gary Chapman, the five love languages are defined as…

1 Words of Affirmation

2 Acts of Service

3 Receiving Gifts

4 Quality Time

5 Physical Touch

Obviously, these are ways that we express ourselves when it comes to love and relationships. Yet these are all acts that can also be done for selfish gain also.

Not only are we presented with the five love languages, but we are also subject to what is called by the Ancient Greeks. The 8 types of love.

8 Ways to Experience Love

The first of these 8 types of love is “Eros” this is an erotic love… And if you know anything about the Ancient Greeks you will also understand why this is the first in order.

I’ll let you study that for yourself if you know what I mean? The remaining types are as follows:

“Philia” or Affectionate Love. …

“Storge” or Familiar Love. ….

“Ludus” or Playful Love. …

“Mania” or Obsessive Love. …

“Pragma” or Enduring Love. …

“Philautia” or Self Love. …

“Agape” or Selfless Love.

Now out of all this love talk and love types, there is one attribute that we must concern ourselves with above all else.

Can you guess what that is?

If you guessed the “Agape”  Selfless Love you would be absolutely right.

When we study 1st Corinthians 13 you and I discover what this Agape looks like or behaves in action.

As I said before love is an action word, but not only is it an action word these actions when executed correctly they are not selfish acts.

Real Love is Supernatural.

When the love of God is shed abroad through our hearts by the Holy Spirit as the word of God tells us…

It is a supernatural kind of love. It is the kind of love that allows us to put the needs of others before our own.

The Bible tells us that God has given his children different types of spiritual gifts.

You can study these gifts in Romans 12, 1st Corinthians 12 and also Ephesians 4:7-12.

Here is what I want to bring to your attention though… Out of all of the gifts that we desire the gift that exceeds them all is the gift of love.

Many folks, that would be followers of Jesus and those that don’t follow do not see love as a gift.

But the Bible tells us in 1st Corinthians 14:1 to desire spiritual gifts but the gift of love is to be desired above them all.

Do you desire to be able to love the agape way? I do.

We Need Help to Love The Agape Way.

When the disciples of Jesus asked him to show them the way to our heavenly Father. He said to them…

I am the way, the truth, and the life… He went on to say that no one could come to the Father unless they came through him.

Now that is one of the most radical statements spoken in the Bible… I love it.

Many people in our society don’t wish to believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation.

And because of that, they can never wrap their minds around an even more radical statement that’s found in John 15:5.

Jesus tells us that without him we can do nothing. How radical is that?

So, I say all of that to say this…

Without the love of Jesus flowing in and through our lives we can’t begin to love the agape way.

The agape way is a gift from God that we can only receive through Christ.

The Agape way of Love is Energized by the Holy Spirit.

Don’t get spooky on me because I used the word energized.

To be energized simply means that the power to love God’s way is always empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is a gentleman, and although he wants to give you power he will not force it on any of us.

So, when it comes to allowing the love of God to be shed abroad in our hearts we must yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit’s prompts.

I believe as God gives us gifts they have to be cultivated we have to learn how to use the gifts that God gives us for his glory.

Also just as love is a gift we have to learn how to love the way God wants us to.

Love Is More Than Emotion

Most of us in this world really don’t know how to love we think of love as an emotion yet love is an action love is a choice.

Love does bring on emotions but we must…

Learn how to love the Agape way.

Now, I do believe that God has given some people a unique disposition to love. I mean to genuinely love but for most of us, we have to learn how.

You see most of us, well, all of us come into this world as selfish individuals with selfish desires and selfish ways.

It’s the thing that God calls the fall of man that is responsible for this… we are inherently selfish people.

Therefore we have to learn how to get out of the way of the Holy Spirit and allow him to love others with the love of Jesus by using us as his disciples.

What do I mean by “getting out of the way?”

I mean what we have to do is yield ourselves to the leading or guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The apostle Paul puts it in these words… We are to mortify the deeds of the flesh. This simply means to die to sinful lust and selfish desires.

Dying To Ourselves Ain’t Easy.

Have you tried giving up something that you really want lately?

As I conclude this article I want to leave you with what I believe is the most important attributes of loves behavior.

Love is Sacrificing for Others

There is no other power in heaven and earth that can transform a life for good than the Word of God.

There’s no other book on earth that can give us a better picture of what sacrificial love looks like than the Bible.

So, with that said… I will leave you to meditate on what I have found some the most revealing and transforming words ever spoken.

You will find these words in 1st Corinthians 13:4-8.

Love is patient and is kind; love does not envy. Love does not brag, is not proud…

Does not behave itself inappropriately, does not seek its own way, is not irritable, does not keep a record of wrongs…

Does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails.

That’s it… That’s what we as followers of the Lord Jesus need to meditate on above all else.

After all, he did tell us the folks of this world would know that we are his disciples by the love that we have one for another?
